I had been meditating for years and depressed for even longer, much, much longer, though I somehow did not realize. I got to a point where I was no longer able to meditate or be mindful as the brain fog, lack of sleep, the constant recursive thoughts, and anger had me spiraling down and down and down. I was lucky enough to get on some meds, get some sleep and take some time off to get to a more neutral state. Then I found this book. It was like the missing piece linking mindfulness - day to day, minute to minute mindfulness - and my mental and emotional state. It seems obvious in retrospect. Will I ever be OK, or even find some lasting happiness? I don't know. I do know that I never have to go down so far again. This book will not solve your problems or cure your depression. It will however give you the guidance you may need to help yourself deal with the depression you feel and keep you from spiraling downward. It will take time, commitment and some patience with yourself. You have to be willing.

I've suffered depression for sometime now and I've tried several treatments including antidepressants. I did improve sometimes but not quite. I was in a constant struggle. Actually I was basically at war with my own mind, trying to control my thoughts so i could avoid slipping through the bottomless pit of depression and hopelessness. It was extremely tiring, I became basically the police of my own brain. My mother told me all my life that I wasn't supposed to feel angry or sad or frustrated (she still tells me those things) but that doesn't work, at least not for me. Trust me , I've been trying for years but then I only get frustrated and angry at my self when I miserably fail at controlling my mind. Then I came across this book. I originally thought it was going to help me control my thoughts and then I came to the revelation that I don't need to do that. What I had to do was realize that they are just thoughts! The fact that I THINK something doesn't make it real. That I can be aware of myself and then choose how to respond to any given situation, I don't have to respond in autopilot. I didn't know that was possible!I've tried several meditation techniques but never mindfulness and it has helped me. It has been one epiphany after another.I don't mean that I'm depression free but I don't feel so much burden. My thoughts are just that and when I realize that it automatically stops my rumination. I do feel much better. I highly recommend this book. The recordings are life savers as well. I love the fact that you can download them even if you buy the kindle version.

I confess to not yet committing myself to the program the book offers for lack of time (they rec doing it when one has time to spare) BUT this book is very close to a life saver. The real world cases they share are honest and wise, the science is solid, and for people who need to read a book to help them deal with tough moments (I had one and I did) this is a treasure trove of good tips, practices, and useful insights. I still find myself thinking about pages from the book almost half a year after finishing it and I'm sure you will to.

I found the book to be a real help in understanding how we create our own suffering and stress/anxiety/depression. My motivation was a desire to find a way to cope with chronic winter depression without resorting to antidepressants or psychotherapy. I read it at the same time as a book on cognitive based behavioral therapy (which I also reviewed) to understand the similarities and differences in the approaches. There is no question that this book has had a real impact on my daily life and how I see things. But what I discovered after reading it and investigating the field of mindfulness (and even dabbling in Buddhist philosophy via the excellent podcasts from Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Center in LA, which I also highly recommend) was that anyone expecting miraculous changes in 8 weeks is only fooling him or herself. There is the suggestion early on in the book that following the 8 week program will somehow result in mysterious and unexpected changes. Well, if you are serious and apply yourself you WILL see change but it ain't mysterious. This is hard work for the long-haul, people!I liked the friendly, compassionate way the book guides you through the various exercises and explains how and why our mind works as it does, and how cognitivie patterns can lead to unhappiness. The CD was good but it would have been nice to have a few extra exercises (meditations) beyond what is offered, such as coping with difficulty, cultivating kindness and compassion, or even variations on the basic themes offered by the book. No offense, Jon, but I cannot take hearing your voice leading me through the Body Scan every day for weeks on end! (I actually alternated the meditations on the CD with those from the other Mindfulness book co-authored and narrated by Mark Williams, available online. That Body Scan was about half the length of this one). One suggestion for the next edition, and for those espousing and teaching mindfulness in general: how about offering the fidgety among us practices for more active mindful movement, e.g. walking, jogging or rowing? Some of us can only take so much sitting and lying, or gentle yoga. I personally do much of my mindfulness training while Nordic walking, and find it to be a very good way to quiet my mind and also release stress, which sometimes accumulates when I am forced to be inactive for too long a time. All in all a recommended read for those of us battling depression in whatever form it takes.

I've suffered from depression through much of my life starting at about age eleven (I'm now forty-seven). I found this book extremely helpful, have highlighted it extensively, and reread it periodically. I'm now reading it to my adolescent daughter, who is also finding it very helpful. The explanations of how our minds get caught in depression ring so true for me, and following the advise given has helped change my emotional life. The process has been slow, as should be expected, but the changes have been profound. I did have some experience with meditation before I read the book, and I've been on an antidepressant for years. Both helped. Adding the knowledge I gained from this book, and living the changes it prescribes have been the boost I needed to start lifting completely out of depression. I have finally begun experiencing periods of happy peace for the first time since childhood.
